Senior citizens will have more support and care with the development of a National Policy Framework for the Elderly in Fiji, making it the first country in the Pacific to do so.

UNFPA revealed that the elderly population from the age of 60 years and over in the pacific region is expected to increase from 367,000 in 2000 to 2.3 million by 2050.

Permanent Secretary Govind Sami said Fiji's elderly population has increased over the past two decades and with a further increase expected in the next 50 years, the government has taken the initiative to develop a proactive approach towards the welfare of senior citizens in the country.

Sami said the social protection of the elderly will include health care, transportation, long term institution care, support arrangements for family care givers and support for the disabled entry will all be reviewed.
