Senior officer says Rokotunidau was sacked
Saimoni Rokotunidau, a renowned felon, has 32 previous convictions and is alleged to have been involved in eight major armed robberies dating back to 2003, which included the ANZ bank robbery in Samabula, ANZ bank in Centrepoint, home invasions, burglary and house break in.
His lawyer had earlier informed the court that Rokotunidau was an undercover police officer and helped in the recovery of 12 missing weapons and could guarantee the recovery of the other weapons missing since the 2000 coup.
As the sentencing hearing continued in court yesterday, Tabakau told the court that he was in charge of a covert operation and had no knowledge of Rokotunidau's involvement in the operation.
Rokotunidau's lawyer Aseri Vakaloloma also asked Tabakau whether he was aware that Rokotunidau had been working for the Police Force before 2009, to which Tabakau said no.
Vakaloloma also asked Tabakau that since he has been with the Police Force for 29 years he was not aware of Rokotunidau being part of the Police Force.
To this Tabakau said that some informers were registered while others were not.
Vakaloloma also asked whether arms were recovered in the Nakasi armed robbery and if Tabakau could confirm that at that time, Rokotunidau was working as a undercover police officer.
Tabakau replied that at that time Rokotunidau was a police officer and they trusted him at that time.
Tabakau also informed the court that Rokotunidau was terminated however his lawyer said that Rokotunidau had not received any termination letter.
Tabakau replied that as far as the Police Force was concerned Rokotunidau had been terminated and had no longer needed his services.
Rokotunidau will be sentenced next Friday.
His lawyer asked for a suspended sentence.
