A 48-year-old senior military officer appeared before Magistrate Aminiasi Katonivualiku charged with defiling a 15-year-old girl.
Police prosecutor Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Epeli Talakubu confirmed that the officer faces 3 counts of defilement. These were read to him in court. The court heard that on the 13th February this year, the officer had unlawful carnal knowledge with the victim.
The plea has been deferred to July 3rd as the accused asked for time to seek legal assistance.
ASP Talakubu objected to bail on the grounds that the charge is serious and if he is released, he will continue to abuse the girl as the accused was responsible for the welfare of the girl.
The accused is remanded in custody and bail will be reviewed on July 3rd.
