Security Guard Jailed For One Year
Jatendra Nair who was employed at Allied Security Company as a security officer stole $40 worth of items from his workmate and sold a radio to a pawn shop in Nausori which was recovered.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Gosai told the court that on 31st August, when he was assigned to guard Suva Muslim College, he stole items worth more than $1300 including school jackets, a soccer jersey, cash, a soccer ball with a pump, a sandwich maker, a coffee mug, socks, groceries and a stop watch.
He also informed Magistrate Amani Rokotinaviti that when Nair completed his shift he lodged a complaint at Nabua Police Station that two men wearing masks wielding a cane knife and bolt cutters broke into the office and stole the items.
After investigations, some items were found in Nair's possession while he had burnt the other items.
In mitigation, he told the court that he was remorseful, single and the sole bread winner in the family.
However, Magistrate Rokotinaviti said that he has committed a serious offence and breached the trust placed in him and the security firm which trusted that Nair will guard the two premises.
He also said that what makes the matter more serious is that he gave false information to police and had planned his actions and must be punished to learn his lesson.
