Starting from tomorrow all passengers will be required to wear seat belts while traveling in the back seat of vehicles which has up to seven seats.
At a press conference this afternoon, Land Transport Authority's Acting Chief Executive Officer, Etuate Koroi announced that the move is already in their regulations but never enforced.
However as of tomorrow LTA Officers will crack down on people who do not wear seat belts while traveling in the specified vehicles.
Koroi has also confirmed that those vehicles which do not have seat belts in the back seat will also be required to have them installed.
Koroi says an $80 fine will be imposed on those failing to wear seat belts or if taken to court than the person might end up spending 3 months in prison.
In another enforcement, passengers will not be allowed to carry children on their laps while seating in the front seat of a vehicle. If parents are carrying their children on their laps, than they need to sit in back seats.
Meanwhile, the latest stats released by LTA reveals that a total of 8,123 people were booked in 2006 for not wearing seat belts, compared to 2000 which was 9.
