The Fiji Police Force Chief of Operations ACP Rusiate Tudravu says they will only call off their search for the five fishermen missing at sea when they have exhausted all avenues and resources to find them.

The five fishermen who all left for separate fishing trips have been missing at sea for more than a week.

He says if they assess that all the resources which they are using may not lead to a successful result then the search operation will be called off.

Tudravu stresses that only the Acting Commissioner can give the approval to call off the search operation.

Tudravu is also calling on the families of the missing fishermen to be careful when they are conducting their own search operation.

Police continue to have no positive progress in their search for the five missing fishermen.

Currently missing at sea is 34‑year‑old Nigel Nischal Mani and 34‑year‑old Rajneel Rajnesh Reddy who went on a fishing trip to the Vatu-i-Ra passage last Thursday.

Also missing at sea is Nakasi resident, Yakub Khan also known as Sonny.

50‑year‑old Khan was on a fishing trip with two others last Friday when their boat capsized.

Two of the men managed to save their lives by swimming ashore while Khan is yet to be found.

Police have also confirmed that 49‑year‑old Rajeshwar Naidu and 45‑year‑old Edward Lavish from Karavi, Ba are still missing at sea.

The two were on board a red 27 feet half cabin boat named JADE and were fishing off Yadua Island.

People living in nearby areas are advised to keep a lookout and report any sightings to the Police Search and Rescue Center on 3318529.
