The Auditor General’s Office has revealed that some schools have been misusing the school grants given by the government.
While speaking before the Public Accounts Committee, the Auditor General’s Office said they cannot reveal the names of the schools but states there are prominent schools within the Suva-Nausori corridor that are using the tuition fee grant to give loans to other institutions that are linked to the school or to pay off their loans.
This was picked in the reports in 2010 to 2012 reports.
They said they have noted through their audit findings that one of the problems is the lack of monitoring of these funds by the Ministry of Education.
Permanent Secretary for Education Kelera Taloga agreed with the findings saying that they have issues regarding the monitoring of funds.
Taloga said they have now put in place strategies to closely monitor the accounts and also set up an audit team.
