Four schools in the Western Division received grants amounting to just over $25,000 from the Australian High Commission through its Direct Aid Program.

According to Acting Australian High Commissioner, Andrew Martin the direct aid program aims to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development by addressing humanitarian issues and it provides assistance for small scale development projects.

Schools such as Vatuloula Convent and Qerelevu Hindu school who received grant of just over $8700 and $6700 respectively will use the money to buy much needed school and library books as students of Qerelevu Hindu school have to travel 25 km to their nearest public library.

Gurukul Primary School received a grant of over $8700 and they will also use the money to buy wider range of library books while Tailevu North College will use the grant to purchase agricultural equipment for the school's Agricultural Science Department.
