School aged children are undergoing screening conducted by doctors and nurses for early signs of heart defects in Yaqara Ra today.

More than 500 children have already undergone the screening process in Ra and so far 30 children have been identified as showing early signs of Rheumatic Heart Disease and with proper monthly injections and treatment, the children should be able to lead long lives without the intervention of major surgery.

The project is being carried under the Fiji's National Rheumatic Heart Disease Control and Prevention Project supported by the Fiji Water Foundation.

A pediatrician at the CWM Hospital, Dr Joseph Kado said recent data from Fiji and Tonga shows that the disease in school aged children is the highest and around 40,000 children in the Pacific are affected.

Dr Kado and Dr Monika Brook of the Lautoka Hospital are screening children at Rabulu Indian School, Draunivi Primary, Naseyani Primary and Vatukaloko Jnr Secondary Schools today.
