Kamil Muslim College in Ba is no longer charging students money for speaking in vernacular during classes.

This follows a directive by the Education Ministry this morning.

The Media Unit of Education Ministry has confirmed that this practice has stopped as of this morning after Fijivillage News raised the issue.

Some concerned parents told Fijivillage News yesterday that students were fined 10 to 20 cents if they were caught speaking in vernacular and some students were paying these fines from their bus fare.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has also warned teachers not to charge library fees if the children do not return books on time.

According to the Ministry they are aware that some schools are charging library fees and this should stop immediately.

However, the Ministry has clarified that if students lose the library book then they will have to pay to the school.
