Samoa ran in seven tries to thrash Group B opponents Papua New Guinea 38-4 in the Rugby League World Cup at Craven Park.

The result means Papua New Guinea next need to beat holders New Zealand to avoid elimination, while Samoa face France, with the losers likely to face hosts England or Fiji in the quarter-finals.

Antonio Winterstein scored three tries for Samoa, with Pita Godinet, Ben Roberts, Sauaso Sue and Suaia Matagi adding further scores.

Meanwhile, the Vodafone Fiji Bati will play England at 3.30am this Sunday.
