The Samoa 7s team recorded their first win in the New Zealand 7s in Wellington after they beat France in their first pool game by 31-19 in the last hour.
Samoa's first try came from Mikaele Pesamino while the other tries came from Timoteo Iosua and Reupena Levasa.
Both sides were tied 12-all at halftime.
In the second game of the day, Canada caused the first upset beating Argentina 26-7.
England is defeated USA by 31-7.
Fiji's opening pool match will be against Scotland at 2.28pm then play Papua New Guinea at 5:24pm with their last match against Australia at 9:34pm.
