Samoa crowned 2009-2010 IRB World 7s Series champs


Samoa has been crowned the 2009-2010 IRB World 7s Series title holders after making it through to the finals of the Scotland 7s and beating Australia 41-14 this morning.

Samoa ran in a total of five tries, three coming of Mikaele Pesamino.

The islanders have been assured the Title as all they needed was to reach the finals.

The Samoans who entered the Tournament with 140 points needed to reach the finals and bag 20 points for them to secure their first ever World Title.

Samoa made it through to the finals after beating England 15-12 in a very close semifinal encounter, with Captain Lolo Lui kicking in the last seconds of extra time.

Samoa's Faga Toulupe added that the side knew from the beginning that the only way in bagging the Title would be if they stuck to the basics.



Looking at other results, Scotland beat Argentina to win the Plate final 19-0, Wales beat Kenya to win the Bowl final 26-10 while Canada lost to Russia in the Shield final 26-7.
 
Meanwhile, Fiji after losing 15-7 to Australia in the Cup quarterfinal went on to lose to Argentina 17-19 in Semifinal of the plate competition to Argentina.

Looking at the overall IRB series standings Samoa take home the title with 164 points, second is New Zealand with 149 points, third is Australia with 122 points while Fiji is fourth with 108 points.
