Sale of second hand goods should be monitored-Kumar
These are the words of Consumer Council of Fiji Chief Executive Officer Premila Kumar who said they are working closely with the Department of Fair Trading and Consumer Affairs as complaints have been received on the poor quality and safety of these second-hand products.
Kumar said they have received 27 complaints on second hand products which became defective days after purchase.
Kumar said the most recent complaint received is from a taxi driver who said he bought two second hand tires which both burst on a trip to the Western Division and then found out that the tires he bought were not fit for Fiji roads but was made for mud and snow roads and when he wanted a refund, the company he bought it from said the importing of the tires had stopped.
She believes there is a need to impose minimum standards on used goods brought into Fiji to save consumers from potentially unsafe or non-serviceable goods that could adversely affect consumer health and safety, as well as the environment.
