SODELPA will elect a new party leader later this month.

The party's general assembly will be held on the 25th of this month, and the nominees for the SODELPA leader's position will be known by next week.

As discussed in the last general assembly which also resulted in changes to the party's constitution, a party leader can be elected two years prior to the next general election to prepare the party for the national polls.

The party constitution was changed to allow the election of a new leader while the current leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa can continue as parliamentary leader until the next election in 2018.

Ro Teimumu has already announced that she will not contest the next election in 2018.

Some people who have been nominated to the SODELPA leader's post include Sitiveni Rabuka and Anare Jale.

SODELPA's Interim General Secretary, Adi Litia Qionibaravi says they cannot reveal any names at this stage as they have to check if the nominees are eligible to be a party leader under the Political Parties Decree.

She says the confirmed nominees will be known after this process.
