Ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase said the SDL party has every right to contest the March 2009 general election although Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama earlier highlighted that the People’s Charter may prevent Qarase and his SDL party from contesting the election

Qarase says 1997 constitution is the Supreme law of the land and Bainimarama should clarify once and for all what does the People's Charter meant to him, his party and the people of Fiji

Speaking from Tonga earlier this week, Bainimarama says he may hold a national referendum on the People's Charter with the view of changing some electoral amendments, to stop voting along racial lines. However, Qarase said that this contradicts what is stated in the 1997 constitution that is currently being followed.
