SDL Issues Discussed At AGM
Firstly, the SDL said it is deeply concerned at the blatant attempt by the Interim Government to whitewash Interim Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry's actions over his taxation saga adding they feel he has been an embarrassment to the Interim Administration and he should be dismissed from his post, if the Interim Government's 'cleanup campaign' or any of its promises is to be believed.
The SDL also mentioned as one of their resolutions, their concern with the operations of FICAC since its formation. This includes the question about its legality and its 'block buster' approach in obtaining evidence and dealing with suspects which are not in keeping with the cardinal principle of the presumption - innocent until proven guilty. SDL adds FICAC's record is unimpressive, abysmal and is a national embarrassment. The SDL urge that serious attention should be given to the review of its legislation, which should really be undertaken by an elected Government in Parliament including its professional leadership and staffing.
The Party are also raising concern at the long delay in the appointment of the Supervisor of Elections by the relevant authorities as the appointment is critical in the move towards democratic elections in March, 2009.
The SDL have also raised their concern with the Interim Government's actions to force out the Chief Justice from his post on some allegations of corruption and the delay with which it has taken for a competent Tribunal to be set up to decide on his case. The SDL note that such a delay represents a denial of justice to the most senior officer of the judiciary.
