The continuous downturn of the economy will only see more families fall apart.

This is the view of the SDL General Assembly at their AGM on Friday. The SDL party said they were concerned at the high rate of inflation, negative growth forecast for 2 years in a row, high unemployment rate and breakdown in law and order.

According to SDL, a direct result of the economic problems is the breakdown in families and community support.

A solution to this, they said, is that the interim administration seriously consider returning the country to democratic rule as soon as possible through elections in early 2009.

Meanwhile, the party is also concerned at the removal and the reduction of grants given to boarding institutions which will affect mostly children in rural areas and outer islands.

This is after the allocation of only 17 places out of 150 places for this year alone for Fijian and Rotuman students at the Fiji School of Medicine and the redirecting of FAB scholarship funds.
