In efforts to discourage people from living in squatter settlements, the Suva City Council will no longer give reference letters for connection of water and electricity in squatter settlements.
SCC Special Administrator, Chandu Umaria said they used to give reference letters to the squatter settlements to be presented to relevant authorities for the connection of water and electricity.
However, Umaria said the council has stopped issuing letters because of the increase in the numbers each day.
He added that the essential service such as water and electricity is not the responsibility of the council but of the relevant government authorities.
