The Suva City Council is under a lot of pressure from the Lands Ministry to develop the Muanivatu Squatter Settlement as part of the terms and conditions of their lease agreement.
This is what the Suva Lord Mayor Ratu Peni Volavola said about the need for the council to have those living in Muanivatu relocated so that they can start with their redevelopment plans.
Volavola said the Council needs to honour the terms and conditions of their lease agreement.
The Suva Lord Mayor had denied reports in one of the dailies that the squatter settlers were granted an extension in stay adding that discussions are continuing to ensure everyone's interests are looked after.
The residents have been given till the end of this month to vacate the land in Vatuwaqa by the Council as they want to redevelop the land for recreational purposes.
The 76 squatter families were given their first eviction notice in 2005.
