The Suva City Council has raised concern with the Ministry of Health on the common trend amongst many members of the public to spit in public places.

This was raised at the Annual Health Promotion Council meeting held early this month, which was chaired by the Interim Minister for Health, Doctor Jiko Luveni who was informed by senior Council officials that people are spitting on almost anything in the City, from city pavements, car parks, at the Market place and even in hospitals.

Ministry of Health Public Relations officer, Vasiti Ritova said the Ministry was informed of the spitting habit during their discussion with the Council on the Standard Hygiene Regulations for food and Juice sellers in the City area.

Ritova stresses that they will be looking at ways to curb this habit. Currently, a fine exists for anyone found spitting.

The Suva City Council is expected to comment later on the issue.
