The Suva City Council will now look at setting up a unit to make sure that those caught breaking the Litter Act are penalized.
Lord Mayor for the City Council, Ratu Peni Volavola said that spitting is a very unhygienic habit and people who spit do not realize that they are actually spreading air borne diseases.
Speaking to Fijivillage, Volavola added that the Council will do all within its means to ensure that those caught spitting are penalized.
Currently the fine for spitting is a $40 spot fine but Volavola added that this should also be relooked at.
Earlier this month, the Ministry of Health along with the Suva City Council held a meeting to address the issue.
