SCC Labourer Guilty of Assault
Those were the words of advice from Suva Magistrate Amani Rokotinaviti to a 33-year-old labourer of the SCC who pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife.
The husband was confronted by his wife after she found out that he was having an affair and after an argument, the man kicked and punched his wife and also hit her with a stick.
The Magistrate warned that the offence is not reconcilable, however, taking into account the mitigating factors, he sentenced him to seven months imprisonment but suspended it for 12 months.
Magistrate Rokotinaviti stressed that men should know by now that they have no right to assault their wives as their duty is to protect and love them.
He also stressed that assault in front of children will not be tolerated.
He also told the accused that if he becomes angry and cannot hold back his temper, he should jump into the Qauia River to cool off instead of assaulting his wife.
