The newly appointed Interim Local Government Minister has given the Suva City Council a one month ultimatum to address the unhealthy and appalling condition of the city or face the consequences.
Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi in a press conference in the last hour revealed that upon receiving numerous complaints from ratepayers and businesspeople, he wrote to SCC yesterday calling for them to clean the city.
Meanwhile, the Suva Lord Mayor has today clarified that he has not received any letter from the Interim Local Government minister and therefore does not know what the issue is.
Speaking to Village News, Ratu Peni Volavola said that he became aware of the issue after being informed by media reports.
However, Volavola added that the municipality under his leadership has set a budget and a timeline which no one has the right to question.
This follows revelations by the newly appointed Local Government minister, Lekh Ram Vaeshnoi that he had issued an ultimatum to the Council to clean up the city in a month's time or face the consequences.
