SCC Contradicts Policy on BBQ Stands
Fijivillage has witnessed SCC workers marking the public footpaths and allocating spaces for about 100 BBQ stalls outside the Vodafone Arena.
However when questioned by Fijivillage, SCC's Director Administration, Eroni Ratukalou said he was unaware that the footpath had been marked for the stalls.
When asked whether the Local Government Act had been breached where the BBQ stalls will obstruct the movement of the members of the public, Ratukalou agreed that this may be the case and the matter has to be investigated.
When contacted earlier this afternoon, SCC Director Health Services, Nacanieli Kotoiwasawasa confirmed that they had issued the permit for the BBQ stalls after people approached them that they wanted to sell BBQ along the roadside. He denied that the stalls would be on the footpath and he maintains that there will be no public obstruction.
He also said that frequent health inspections will be carried out.
Police and the Health Ministry are expected to comment later. Thousands of pedestrians are expected to use the public footpath along Laucala Bay from this Saturday as Fiji Showcase 2008 kicks off at the Vodafone Arena.
