Former Reds skills coach and Australian touch rugby expert Jason Stanton has joined the Springboks Sevens team in Wellington to assist the South Africans in their preparations for the New Zealand International Sevens which starts on Friday.

Stanton, who helped Australia to three consecutive Touch Rugby world titles, guided the Australian women's team to victory in the inaugural IRB Sevens World Cup in Dubai last year.

South Africa Sevens coach Paul Treu said Stanton has a refreshingly different approach to skills coaching and his presence will really help his side and getting them back on track.

Treu guided South Africa to IRB Series honours last season, but he and his team has found the going extremely tough during the opening part of the new campaign.

South Africa is one of the favourites to win the New Zealand International Sevens tournament this weekend.

They play Niue in their opening pool match on Friday at 3:34pm.

They also have Wales and New Zealand in their pool.
