The Lami Town Council is working with the Ministry of Local Government and the Department of Environment to use the old rubbish dump at Delainavesi for recreational purposes.

Special Administrator Chandu Umaria said rehabilitation works has been given to BW Holdings after securing a agreement with the government which has already underway.

Chandu said once work is completed the council will then upgrading the site as recreational area for the people of Lami and Suva to use.

The rehabilitation works will last 12 months, which includes leveling of waste, slope protection using soil filled geo cells and armor rocks and a cover up of the site with soil to ensure vegetation growth.

The project aims to minimise future environmental risks of the dump site for the benefit of the people living in surrounding areas including the Capital City.

The project is funded by the European Union Development Fund programme that pumps in $4.5 million to the Fiji Solid Waste Management programme.
