The people of Rotuma commemorate the 128th anniversary of the cession of the island to the British Crown and celebrations are underway.

This is to remember the day the chiefs of Rotuma ceded the island to Queen Victoria in 1881, seven years after Fiji's cession in 1874.

Joined in the celebrations are members of the Fiji delegation led by Commissioner Eastern Tomasi Tui.

Tui said that part of the celebration is the farewell banquet for the government delegation after touring the project areas for the past two days.

Projects included the construction of the Quarantine and Customs Departments, upgrade works at the Malahaha airport and the Oinafa Port for next year.

The delegation heads back home tomorrow.
