Roofs blown away in Yasawas
A number of families in the smaller islands in the Yasawa group had to flee to safety after their homes were blown away by strong winds in the last hour.
Police Media Officer West Wame Bautolu confirmed that no reports of injuries have come in and those affected are now taking shelter in designated evacuation centers in the Yasawas.
He confirmed that at the moment there are no reports of flooding or damages from the Lautoka area.
Viwa village Turaga ni Koro, Pauliasi Tunisau said a few kitchens have been destroyed and some breadfruit trees have been uprooted due to the strong winds adding that visibility is poor.
In the Mamanucas, people said winds have picked up strength in the last hour ago.
People started putting up their shutters from this morning.
Malolo Island Resort said their guests have been taken indoors in light of the weather condition.
In Bua, all villagers near the sea have moved to higher ground.
Pio Sioweli, from Vuya Village said the Turaga ni koro in Vuya called for all the villagers to move to higher ground last night and close to 70 families have moved into their village hall which is on high ground.
Sioweli said they have started stocking up on their root crops adding they are experiencing heavy rain and their coastal areas are flooded.
Sioweli's granddaughter, Ana Maria said that they have started moving people staying in small lean to houses.
Close to 5 families in Nasarawaqa in Bua are now struggling to secure their houses after the heavy rain overnight cut off all forms of transport in and out of their area.
A school teacher, Mohammeed Shaheed said that at the moment they are struggling and are now trying to move to safety.
Meanwhile, Solevu Village located along the coast in Bua has been evacuated as a precautionary measure.
In Labasa, residents are currently experiencing strong winds and rain.
Subramani Achari, a cane farmer of Tabia said the rain and wind has seen many people in his Naqele settlement, opt to stay indoors.
However, Achari said they have not seen any damage so far.
He added that they have brought in all their livestock and have put their hurricane shutters up.
In Lautoka, Prakash Chand of Lovu said they are currently experiencing very strong winds and heavy rain adding it is highly likely to start flooding soon.
In Rakiraki, Police confirm the Korotale and Rewasa bridges in Rakiraki are under four feet of water and closed to all traffic.
Police said all other areas in the Western Division are experiencing heavy rain and strong winds adding the Kings and Queens Road remain open for traffic.
He reminded people to take heed of the warnings.
