Roofs blown away in Yasawas
A number of families in the smaller islands in the Yasawa group had to flee to safety after the roofs of their homes were blown away by strong winds in the last hour.
Police Media Officer West Wame Bautolu confirmed that no reports of injuries have come in and those affected are now taking shelter in designated evacuation centers in the Yasawas.
Yasawa-i-rara villager, Kinisimere Yagolevu said four houses have been damaged with their roofs blown off adding water is currently rising with their young men with boats going around picking people up and taking them to higher ground.
Viwa village Turaga ni Koro, Pauliasi Tunisau said a few kitchens have been destroyed and some breadfruit trees have been uprooted due to the strong winds adding that visibility is poor.
Tunisau added three houses have been completely destroyed, roof tops have been blown away adding most of the villages are in the church while the rest have been relocated to concrete houses on higher ground.
He said the 60 foot Viwa Island Resort boat which is self contained has been completely destroyed by strong winds adding the pieces of the boat are all scattered on the village green.
Tunisau added they have stocked up on food and water adding no one is injured.
In the Mamanucas, Malolo Island employee Ili said while they have light showers, winds are really strong.
In Bua, all villagers near the sea have moved to higher ground.
Pio Sioweli, from Vuya Village said the turaga-ni-koro in Vuya called for all the villagers to move to higher ground last night and close to 70 families have moved into their village hall which is on high ground.
Sioweli said they have started stocking up on their root crops adding they are experiencing heavy rain and their coastal areas are flooded.
Sioweli's granddaughter, Ana Maria said that they have started moving people staying in small lean to houses.
Close to 5 families in Nasarawaqa in Bua are now struggling to secure their houses after the heavy rain overnight cut off all forms of transport in and out of their area.
A school teacher, Mohammeed Shaheed said at the moment they are struggling and are now trying to move to safety.
Residents in Wairiki and Namau, in Nabouwalu have been advised that the Namau Bridge has been underwater from last night and the water level continues to rise due to heavy rain.
Police Officer in Charge at the Nabouwalu Police Station, Samuela Matai confirms this and has advised residents to stay indoors.
Meanwhile, Solevu Village located along the coast in Bua has been evacuated as a precautionary measure.
In Labasa, residents are currently experiencing strong winds and rain.
Subramani Achari, a cane farmer of Tabia said the rain and wind has seen many people in his Naqele settlement opt to stay indoors.
However, Achari said they have not seen any damage so far.
He added that they have brought in all their livestock and have put their hurricane shutters up.
