The United States recognizes the desire for political reform in Fiji and supports steps that hasten Fiji's return to a constitution and free elections.

However, the US Department of State said the roadmap or strategic framework for change falls short of that goal.

In a statement, the US said the roadmap is imposed without the participation or consent of the Fijian people and it delays the process leading to elections.

Information Permanent Secretary Lieutenant Colonel Neumi Leweni said it is quite clear that the US does not want to engage with Fiji despite the fact that Prime Minister Bainimarama has set an election timeline.
