Why should we pay the Road User Levy, when the roads are in a bad state?
This is the question raised today by public transport operators at the 8th Fiji National Transport Consultative Forum currently being held at the Novotel Convention Centre in Lami.
Those present are stakeholders of the transport industry, to develop an integrated transport system that is safe, efficient, affordable, accessible and environmentally sustainable.
Fiji Taxi Union's General Secretary, Rishi Ram said it is unfair people are being charged for a service which is not provided by the relevant authority.
Similar sentiments were shared by the President of the Fiji Bus Operators Associations Rohit Latchan who said it is a costly exercise to maintain their buses considering the bad road conditions.
Meanwhile, FIT's Dean of Faculty for Commerce Hospitality and Tourism Studies, Dr Mahendra Reddy said action can be taken against the relevant authority for failure to maintain the roads.
Government introduced a Road User Levy this year which is expected to generate some $8million a year for road maintenance.
