The failure of past governments to maintain proper road conditions in the Province of Bua is one of the contributing factors which has led to 63% of the people in the province living below the poverty line.
Former Bua Provincial Council Chairman Ratu Filimoni Ralogaivau said most of the people in the province depend on agriculture products for their income and with poor road conditions, they are affected.
Meanwhile, Labasa mayor Pradeep Singh said poverty in the North will continue to be an issue in Labasa unless there are realistic policies put in place when it comes to development incentives like the “Look North Policy”.
The report revealed that 53% of the people in Vanua Levu are living below the poverty line which is the highest compared to other areas.
