Richie McCaw will undergo surgery on his broken thumb today with the recovery time still expected to be eight weeks.

McCaw’s injury is just one of the many worries the Crusaders have to deal with in the wake of back to back losses to kick off Super Rugby.

Sam Whitelock said after going unbeaten with the All Blacks last year, he's finding the losses particularly hard to deal with.

McCaw will have a permanent screw inserted into his thumb, which the Crusaders say will have no long lasting effects.

The Crusaders will play the Stormers at 6:35pm Saturday.
