Richie McCaw has been given New Zealand's highest honour.

The former All Blacks captain was today formally appointed to the The Order of New Zealand which is confined to 20 living New Zealanders.

A higher honour than a knighthood, it is awarded for “outstanding service to the Crown and people of New Zealand in a civil or military capacity.

Richie McCaw led the All Blacks to a second straight World Cup triumph in 2015.
