It has been confirmed that people, especially in the northern division, are not getting a sufficient supply of rice in most of the major supermarkets.
People we spoke to raised concern that they couldn’t buy rice from shops as they were told from close sources within the supermarket that some supermarkets are trying to save stock and sell it when the price of rice goes up.
Mahen Kumar of Labasa said people are really frustrated as they couldn’t buy rice yesterday.
Rahman Shah of Savusavu said they are also experiencing similar problems.
The Consumer Council Chief Executive, Premila Kumar said supermarket owners can be taken to task if they are found holding onto old stock.
Most of the supermarket owners we spoke to said there was less supply from distributors and refuted claims that they are holding onto stock.
Meanwhile, Flour Mills of Fiji Chief Executive Officer, Sanjay Punja has confirmed that supply of rice to all parts of Fiji will normalize by Wednesday.
