The Health Ministry is concerned that close to 300 people including children are detected with Acute Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease in Fiji every year.
Chairman of Rheumatic Heart Disease Technical Team, Doctor Joseph Kado said that young children are susceptible to the disease and they should be taken great care off by their parents and guardians.
Dr Kado said that living in crowded conditions also leads to having the disease and they are raising community awareness amongst people so that they take their children to hospital and not treat them at home when they are sick.
He said they are also targeting schools all around Fiji to see that children are screened and tested as many times as possible as it is hard to detect if a child has Rheumatic Fever until it gets chronic.
