16 villages in the Rewa Delta area are now receiving tap water supply after upgrading works costing $132,000 was completed by the Water Authority of Fiji earlier this month.
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said the government has set aside funds under the Emergency Works Programme to ensure that water, which is a basic need, is supplied to people who face water disruptions on a daily basis.
He said even navy divers were brought in to ensure that the work is completed in a timely manner.
Commodore Bainimarama said some issues have surfaced after the works because some pipelines were affected as running water has not gone through these pipes for years.
Meanwhile two to three hours of travel everyday and $2 contribution of fuel from every family in the village of Vunuku in the Rewa Delta has now come to an end.
This is after the new water pipes were installed to help in solving water problems faced by the villagers.
Over the years the water disruptions had even led to students missing classes.
Vunuku villager, Peni Delai said the new pipes have resolved their daily problems of travelling for two to three hours to Naililili to get water.
Meanwhile, Nadoi villager Paula Rauca said the village has been relying a lot on water tanks for the past years, and hopes their water problems will be solved once the pipes are laid down.
