Former High Court Judge Justice Justice Gerad Winter has called on the interim government to urgently review the salary packages offered to local judges and magistrates to be able to attract private practioners to serve in the judiciary.
Judge Winter who leaves the country today after completing his four year term, said it is an area that needs urgent attention as the posts are not attractive to many qualified lawyers.
Interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum agrees that the remuneration for judges and magistrates needs to be reviewed. However, it is something that will have to wait.
