Papua New Guinea said Fiji should return to democratic rule soon by holding free and fair elections as soon as possible.
Speaking to Radio Australia, PNG's Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Abal said people's rights should be respected and the country should return to democratic rule.
"We are concerned about the legitimacy of what we are doing. We need to have a pre-election and then to go about doing those changes so that the people will trust the things about them and call the international community to recognize what is happening there. There are other processes, other than the parliamentary process, which might be acceptable to many people, so they must turn around and put the parliamentary process back in place."
Abal said the issue will also be discussed at the Pacific Islands Leaders Forum in Niue which starts on August 18.
"We are not that confident that the elections might be held in March. And that’s a very big concern for PNG as well as for the Pacific island countries in the region. It is a thing that the interim Prime Minister had undertaken and for us as Prime Ministers – we have to report what we have seen in Fiji and Fiji may not be doing as much as it should."
