Retailers have been called to check which salt they import as salt lacking iodine is hazardous to health.
These are the words of Health Minister Doctor Neil Sharma who said that they will now have to implement the legislation to see that people consume salt with iodine.
Dr Sharma said people also need to eat plenty of seafood apart from using iodized salt to prevent iodine deficiency.
Cabinet had passed a legislation in 1996 which allows Fiji to only import iodized salt and lack of iodine in a person causes the thyroid gland at the base of the neck to swell causing Goiter.
It slows the growth of a developing brain mainly of a child and affects the adults as well as reducing physical and mental energy due to low levels of thyroid hormone in the body.
