The food marketing industry is a multi-billion dollar industry and the responsibility falls on parents to ensure their children eat properly.

Interim Trade Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said with a lot of advertisements now on TV and in newspaper, children are vulnerable to being pulled in to eating more junk food.

The Consumer Council carried out a survey on the 25th of February monitoring the number of advertisements during a five day period.

Their survey revealed that of all the advertisements shown, only 10.3% were those containing ads for dairy products, however 89.7% were for fizzy drinks, chocolates, snacks and other junk foods.

This has prompted chief executive Premila Kumar to call for better advertising standards that do not expose children to a lot of advertisements that sway them.

The theme for this year's National Consumers Day is "Say no to Junk Foods - Making parents responsible in Fiji."
