Respect Media Freedom: Tarte
Speaking at the 10th Attorney General's conference today in Sigatoka Tarte spoke on the topic "Freedom, Accountability and Responsibility".
He highlighted the need for the government to comply with the legislation to provide the media with relevant information.
Tarte said that the media and government won't always see eye to eye on some issues, but they must not forget that they are entitled to release information which the public has the right to know of.
Tarte added the media has a responsibility to the public to inform them of what is happening around them.
Meanwhile Deputy Secretary for Information Major Neumi Leweni said the Government has always recognised the importance of the media, and he set the record staraight at the conference saying that Media Freedom is guaranteed under the Constitution.
Leweni said they recognise that they are fully accountable to the public but has also called for fair reporting from media outlets also.
