Banning all forms of corporal punishment is possible and religion should not be an excuse to try and stop the rights of children from being recognised.
These were the words of Peter Newell Co-ordinator of the United Kingdom "Children are Unbeatable" Alliance at a press conference at the Tanoa Plaza today, on Positive Discipline and the banning of all forms of corporal punishment.
Newell, an advocate for children's rights said that the argument "to spare the rod would spoil the child" is not justified as if people who still followed the Old Testament would be stoned or would have their hands cut off for committing offences.
The workshop hosted by Save the Children's Fund Fiji is a two day affair, to create awareness on corporal punishment for Non-Governmental Organisations and other organisations that deal with children.
