Relief flight expected to leave this hour
The New Zealand Air Force C130 "Kiwi 698" aircraft has arrived at the Nausori airport to conduct aerial surveys and distribute relief supplies to Labasa.
Permanent Secretary for Information Lt. Col Neumi Leweni confirmed that the flight touched down at about 10am and will be loaded with relief supplies as well as some government officials before heading to the North.
Meanwhile donor agencies are expected to meet with DISMAC officials today to discuss the immediate assistance needed in the cyclone affected areas.
DISMAC's Operation Officer Anthony Blake said Red Cross is the primary provider for immediate relief efforts on the ground whilst the assessments are continuing.
Blake said the immediate needs for the affected areas include tents and emergency shelters, water storage containers and water purification tablets and emergency morgues.
Speaking from Nausori Airport, acting DISMAC Director, Pajiliai Dobui where the NZ Air Force aircraft is ready to leave with the first load of supplies.
Dobui said all plans are in motion to start off the relief efforts in the affected areas from today.
Dobui said assessments are still being carried out on damage in the Northern and Eastern division.
