The Suva athletics team’s chances of retaining their overall FMF Chow Games title for the 8th year in a row will now rely on how good their relay teams can deliver the results tomorrow afternoon.
The capital city side struggled in the boy’s division on day one of competition but the girl’s team only managed to stamp their dominance in the 200 meter finals.
Rural teams like Cakaudrove, Bua/Macuata, Nadroga/Navosa together with Lautoka have come out strongly today as they try to end Suva’s dominance.
Nasinu Under 12 200 meter champion Timoci Rakata said that he timed his race well to beat the other competitors especially Suva’s Amani Racule who had to settle for silver medal.
National athletics coach Albert Miller said the results of day one indicates that all of the districts have prepared to beat defending champion Suva.
After day 1, Suva leads the girl’s division with 4 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze.
In second place is Lautoka with 4 gold and 1 bronze while Cakaudrove is in 3rd spot with 3 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze.
In the boy’s division, Lautoka leads with 3 gold and 3 silver, Cakaudrove leads with 3 gold and 1 silver, Suva is at 3rd spot with 2 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze.
Tomorrow, the first event will start at 8.10am with the Under 14 girls shot put while the first gold medal from the track will come at 12pm in the finals of the Under 13 girls 800 meters.
