The People's Movement for Political Reform (PEMPOR) has today issued a statement saying that the Pacific Leaders Forum should not push the need for early elections dogmatically, as it may end up being seen as the medium for pushing the needs of politicians to get back quickly into parliament rather than working with Fiji to hear the needs of society.

The party believes there is a need to reinvent democracy in Fiji so that it reflects our social values.

The party also added that it would be nice if Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama could speed up the President’s Political Dialogue Forum process for a move on with to address the issue of democracy.

They also said that Fiji is still suffering from the effects of the severe flooding recently and the need right now is to first address the plight of the affected people to rebuild their lives.

PEMPOR would have preferred that the Forum Leaders meeting, particularly Australia and New Zealand, came to the table with a plan to help Pacific Island states ride out of the global financial crisis.
