The referee and television match official who oversaw Saturday's Chiefs versus Hurricanes Super Rugby match have been demoted for an error that cost the Chiefs the match.

TMO Vinny Munro ruled that Chiefs' Sam Cane knocked the ball on while in a ruck in the 79th minute of the game, despite video of the incident showing Hurricanes prop Chris Eves knocking the ball out of Cane's hands.

After the "knock‑on" Chiefs' halfback Augustine Pulu grabbed the ball and scored a try. The try would have won the Chiefs the match, but it was disallowed after Vinny Munro ruled the ball was knocked‑on.

Vinny Munro has been left off the TMO list for this weekend's round of Super Rugby while Saturday's referee Glenn Jackson has been demoted to touch judge.

The Chiefs play the Bulls on Friday at 7.35pm while the Reds play the Sharks at 9.40pm.
