Reducing working hours is the main step that some small electrical and security companies are planning to take following the new wage rate which came into effect last Wednesday.
A 40 to 50 cents pay increase has been implemented for the Electrical Industry.
Lions Electrical Services Managing Director Shalen Kumar said they will not be able to cope up with the new wage rate.
However, Power Electric Limited which is one of the bigger players in the industry said otherwise. Managing Director Mahen Prasad believes workers in their industry deserve a pay increase.
Looking at the Security Industry, smaller companies have to carefully analyze their situation and take action based on that.
Professional Security Services Limited Managing Director Vijay Prakash said their business has already declined after they tried to pass on the wage increase to customers.
However, Managing Director for Matrix Fiji Peter McGaham said the wage rate increase is a good move for their industry.
A 30 cent increase has been implemented for the security industry which will bring the minimum wage rate for security officer to $2 an hour.
