The Queensland Reds held on for their first victory of the Super Rugby season after edging the Highlanders 28-27 in Brisbane.

Liam Gill, Nick Frisby and Samu Kerevi all scored tries in the first half for the Reds as they dominated the defending champion.

Samu Kerevi had seven tackle busts in the first half while Eto Nabuli helped set up a try.

All Black halfback Aaron Smith scored the Highlanders’ first try and nine minutes later Malakai Fekitoa dived over for a five-pointer.

A golden chance for a Highlanders try was wasted when Rob Thompson dropped a pass from Aaron Smith 20 metres from the try line.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes beat the Jaguares 40-22, the Lions defeated the Sharks 24-9, the Bulls thrashed the Kings 38-6, the Chiefs beat the Blues 29-23, the Crusaders edged the Western Force 20-19 and the Stormers thrashed the Sunwolves 46-19.
